TAMARAC, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that left a 16-year-old boy dead late Wednesday night in Tamarac.
Broward County Regional Communications received a 911 call reporting a shooting at approximately 10:10 p.m. on Dec. 31 at a residence in the 7900 block of Northwest 71st Avenue, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and Tamarac Fire Rescue responded to the scene, where they found a teenage male suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was identified as Orlando Wedderburn, 16, who lived at the address where the shooting occurred.
Wedderburn was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center. He later died from his injuries.
An adult female also suffered a gunshot graze wound during the incident. She was treated at the scene and did not require transport to a hospital, investigators said.
An adult male was detained at the location for questioning. According to detectives, the individual remained on scene after the shooting and cooperated with deputies.
BSO’s Homicide, Special Victims, and Crime Scene units responded to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Detectives said the detained individual claimed he acted in self-defense.
After questioning and a preliminary investigation, the individual was released. No arrests have been announced.
Detectives said the case remains active and ongoing. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
Authorities have not released additional details about what led up to the shooting or the relationship between those involved. The name of the adult female victim and the adult male involved have not been released.
The incident occurred on New Year’s Eve, as many families across the county were ringing in the new year.
