BROWARD COUNTY, FL — FDLE is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that happened Monday evening in Davie, involving members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Gang Task Force and VIPER (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) Unit.

The shooting occurred after deputies coordinated efforts to locate 27-year-old Napolian Marquez Powell, who BSO said was wanted on active criminal warrants for fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement. BSO also said Powell was the subject of a DNA warrant related to a Broward County firearms investigation.

According to BSO, the effort began around 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 29. Detectives located Powell at about 7 p.m. inside a white 2026 Tesla at a Wawa gas station near the 6300 block of Stirling Road in Davie.

BSO said deputies attempted to make contact, and Powell fled the area on foot and ran across the street. Shortly after, deputies made contact with him near the 4200 block of Davie Road Extension.

As officers tried again to take Powell into custody, BSO said he actively resisted arrest and a physical altercation occurred.

Detectives said that during the altercation, deputies attempted to de-escalate by taking a tactical retreat and repeatedly ordered Powell to surrender his gun. BSO said deputies, fearing for their safety, discharged their weapons and struck Powell.

Powell was pronounced dead at the scene in a McDonald’s parking lot, according to BSO.

Authority for the criminal investigation into the shooting sits with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is investigating the circumstances of the deputy-involved shooting.

Separately, BSO said its Homicide and Crime Scene units are investigating the circumstances that led up to the shooting. BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is also conducting an administrative review.

As required by BSO policy, six deputies have been placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation, BSO said.

Next steps include an autopsy by the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death. FDLE’s investigation continues.

For residents in Palm Beach County and across South Florida, the key points to watch are the findings from FDLE’s review of the shooting and the medical examiner’s autopsy results, along with any updates from BSO on the administrative review and the status of the deputies placed on assignment.
