BSO deputies responded to a reported shooting in the 7600 block of Northwest 76th Terrace in Tamarac, and the case was later upgraded to a second-degree murder charge after the victim died, according to BSO.

TAMARAC, FL — A Tamarac shooting case that started as an attempted murder investigation is now being handled as a homicide after the victim died days later, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

BSO said deputies responded shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, May 3, to a report of a shooting in the 7600 block of Northwest 76th Terrace in Tamarac. Deputies located both the shooting victim and the suspect at the scene.

The victim, Vernon Roe, was taken to Broward Health North for treatment, BSO said. The suspect, Xavier Mojica, remained on scene.

Detectives with BSO’s Violent Crimes Unit responded and took over the investigation. BSO said the investigation found Roe and Mojica were involved in a verbal dispute tied to rent payment issues. During the argument, BSO said, Mojica fired his weapon and struck Roe.

Roe later died from his injuries. BSO said Roe succumbed on Friday, May 8, and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

With the victim’s death, the case moved from attempted murder to a murder charge. BSO said Mojica now faces one count of second-degree murder.

BSO is the investigating agency and its Violent Crimes Unit handled the investigation described in the agency’s update.

What happens next is the court process tied to the upgraded charge. Residents should expect the case to proceed under the second-degree murder count now listed by BSO, following the victim’s death after the May 3 shooting.

The shooting location was the 7600 block of Northwest 76th Terrace in Tamarac, and the victim was treated at Broward Health North, where BSO said he was later pronounced dead.
