Kia Hyundai USB Theft

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2024) — Cops identify an emerging trend groups are using to steal some vehicles.

Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD)  says there has been an uptick in Kias being stolen from the area. Police say that the thieves are starting the vehicles using USB cables. This method of car theft is becoming more prevalent on social media and has caused an increase in stolen vehicles, particularly Kias and Hyundais, in Fort Lauderdale.

In one case, on January 9th, 2024, FLPD officers, with assistance from BSO’s Aviation Unit, located the stolen vehicle. There were at least five individuals inside it. The driver and one passenger fled into a residence on NW 17th Avenue in the 900 block. However, officers swiftly apprehended them without any incident. Both individuals will be arrested and charged for their involvement while the remaining three passengers were released at the scene.

FLPD says they are happy to that they were able to quickly reunite victims with their vehicles and apprehend those responsible for such crimes.

FLPD says that at least 60 Kias and Hyundais were stolen out of the area using only a USB cable since November 1st, 2023. Police also say that they believe groups of juveniles are responsible for the tactic as it was recently shared on social media.

According to the US Department of Transportation, Hyundai and Kia have introduced a new software feature to enhance the security of their vehicles without an immobilizer. This software update, provided at no cost to vehicle owners, extends the duration of the theft alarm sound from 30 seconds to one minute. Additionally, it now requires the key to be inserted in the ignition switch in order for the vehicle to start. This software update was in response to the method being shared on TikTok in the form of a challenge.

If you own a Kia or Hyundai, you are urged to check with your local dealership about getting the free software update.
