BROWARD COUNTY, FL — A pedestrian is dead after a crash Tuesday afternoon on South Federal Highway in Pompano Beach, and Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit detectives are investigating what led up to it.
Detectives said the crash happened shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, along South Federal Highway.
According to BSO, the driver of a 2024 BMW M240i, Jo Anne Llera, was traveling southbound on South Federal Highway when she was involved in a rear-end collision with a 2017 Honda Accord in the 500 block. Detectives said Llera maneuvered the BMW around the Honda and continued southbound.
BSO said the investigation has revealed that when the BMW reached the 900 block of South Federal Highway, the vehicle drifted into the swale along the west side of the roadway. The BMW then collided with a covered Broward County bus bench where a pedestrian was located.
Detectives said it is unknown whether the pedestrian was sitting on the bench or standing at the time he was struck.
After hitting the bus bench, detectives said the BMW struck two light poles, a tree, and several unoccupied vehicles on the lot of a nearby auto dealership.
BSO deputies pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue paramedics transported the BMW driver to Broward Health North. BSO said the driver’s injuries were not expected to be life threatening.
BSO said debris from the crash struck a 2010 Lincoln Town Car that was traveling southbound on South Federal Highway. Detectives also said a total of nine unoccupied vehicles on the dealership lot sustained damage.
The pedestrian has not been identified in the information released by BSO.
The authority for the investigation sits with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit, which is working to determine the circumstances of the crash.
