FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — A canal rescue in Broward County drew BSO deputies and firefighters Friday morning after a vehicle went through a fence and into the water next to a shopping plaza in Pompano Beach.
The BSO Public Information Office said the incident was reported around 10:30 a.m. on May 1. Broward County Regional Communications received a call about a vehicle that drove into a body of water adjacent to a shopping plaza in the 2600 block of South Palm Aire Drive.
BSO deputies, Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and an off-duty Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue captain responded. BSO said two deputies immediately entered the water. The off-duty Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue captain joined them to help.
Together, they rescued the driver, an elderly woman who was the sole occupant of the car, BSO said. She is expected to be okay.
One BSO deputy sustained minor injuries during the rescue, according to the agency.
BSO said its Dive Team is responding and will remove the vehicle from the canal.
For residents, the immediate public safety issue is the active response at the canal near the shopping plaza in the 2600 block of South Palm Aire Drive. BSO is the lead law enforcement agency on scene, with Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue involved in the rescue effort. The next step is recovery of the vehicle from the water by BSO’s Dive Team.
