FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Fort Lauderdale police are investigating the shooting of an on-duty police dog during a burglary call in a residential neighborhood west of downtown, a case that ended with a local man in custody, a firearm recovered at the scene, and a veteran K-9 headed into surgery.
The shooting happened in the 1600 block of Northwest 16th Court, where Fort Lauderdale Police Department officers responded at about 7:24 p.m. Saturday to a report of a possible burglary in progress. Officers set up a perimeter around the area, brought in air support from the Broward Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit, and began searching for the suspect.
During that investigation, police say the suspect tried to break out of the perimeter. An officer deployed a police K-9 to help with the apprehension. The suspect then fired a gun, striking the dog.
The injured dog, K-9 Appie, was taken by the handler to an emergency veterinary hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound. Fort Lauderdale police identified Appie as a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois who has been serving with the department since July 2023. The department said Appie was shot in the shoulder, is in stable condition, and was scheduled for surgery Monday.
Police identified the suspect as Christian Q. Bouie, born Aug. 7, 1995, and listed him as a resident of the City of Fort Lauderdale.
After the shooting, officers kept the perimeter in place and the Fort Lauderdale Police Department SWAT team responded to help. Police said the suspect was later found and resisted arrest. With help from a second police K-9, officers took him into custody. Investigators said they recovered a firearm at the scene.
Bouie was then taken by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment of injuries police said he suffered from a K-9 bite during the arrest.
The Fort Lauderdale Police Department said Bouie was charged with use of a deadly weapon on a police, fire, or search and rescue animal; interfering with a law enforcement officer with violence; possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon; and resisting an officer without violence.
The case remains under investigation. That matters for two reasons. First, the shooting itself involves a police animal injured during an active law enforcement response, which can bring enhanced criminal charges under Florida law. Second, detectives are still working to fill in the full sequence of what happened during the attempted burglary response, the flight from the perimeter, the gunfire, and the arrest that followed.
Responsibility for the investigation sits with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. The department’s homicide unit is seeking additional information, even though a suspect has already been charged. Police often continue collecting witness statements, surveillance video, and other evidence after an arrest, especially in cases involving gunfire and injuries to officers or police animals.
Residents in the area who may have seen part of the incident, the perimeter operation, or the suspect’s movements before the arrest are being asked to come forward. Anyone with information is urged to contact Homicide Detective Jason Wood at 954-828-5344. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
For residents, the main takeaway is straightforward: a burglary investigation escalated into an armed confrontation with police, an on-duty K-9 was shot, and the criminal case is now moving forward while detectives continue building the investigation.
