UPDATE
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — POMPANO BEACH — Two Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies went into a canal and pulled an elderly woman from her sinking vehicle after it drove into the water near a shopping plaza in Pompano Beach.
Broward County Regional Communications received the report around 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 1. The call came in for a vehicle that drove into a body of water adjacent to a shopping plaza in the 2600 block of South Palm Aire Drive.
BSO deputies responded along with Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and an off-duty Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue captain.
According to BSO, Det. Robert Rutkowski, Dep. Zachary Kerin and Fort Lauderdale Fire Captain Keith Costa were first on scene. They saw the vehicle taking on water and sinking, and moved quickly to reach the driver, who was trapped inside.
Body-worn camera video captured the rescue. As the vehicle continued to sink, Dep. Kerin shattered the passenger-side window. The two deputies then pulled the woman out through the opening.

Deputies on shore helped pull the rescuers and the driver back to land. BSO said the vehicle disappeared beneath the water seconds after the woman was brought to shore.
Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony credited the deputies’ actions for the outcome, calling it a rescue measured in seconds.
BSO did not release the woman’s name or provide additional details about her condition beyond saying she was alive after the rescue.
For residents in Boca Raton and across Palm Beach County who drive regularly in Broward, the incident is a reminder that canals and retention ponds sit close to many roadways and shopping areas. In emergencies like this, the response falls to local dispatch and the agencies on scene — in this case Broward County Regional Communications, BSO, Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.
What happens next is typically handled by the agencies involved. BSO has released the body-worn camera video as part of its public information report on the incident.
