COCONUT CREEK, FL — A 2023 Hyundai traveling westbound on Sample Road left the road late Saturday, hit a concrete traffic light pole near the entrance to Tradewinds Park and killed both people inside, according to the Coconut Creek Police Department.

The crash happened at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, June 27, in the 3600 block of Sample Road, the department said in a statement posted to its Facebook page two days later. The Hyundai was the only vehicle involved.

The driver, a 30-year-old man from Coral Springs, and the passenger, a 26-year-old woman, also from Coral Springs, both died at the scene. Police have not publicly released their names. The crash investigation is ongoing.

The Coconut Creek Police post drew hundreds of reactions and a heavy comment thread in the days that followed. Several commenters said they knew one or both of the two people killed, describing personal ties through family, work and youth activities. One commenter wrote that a coach was among the dead. Another wrote that she had spoken with one of the victims by video call in the hours before the crash. Others said they had driven past the scene in the immediate aftermath.

A recurring theme in the comments was the stretch of Sample Road itself. One commenter identified the westbound approach to the crash site as the descent from what they called the "tall hill," which another described as the Florida's Turnpike overpass. A separate commenter wrote that the section between the Turnpike, Tradewinds Park and Lyons Road has a reputation for serious crashes. Multiple commenters urged drivers to slow down.

A shorter reply thread pushed back on early speculation about the cause, with some commenters asking others to wait for the investigation before assigning blame.

The 3600 block of Sample Road runs along the northern edge of Tradewinds Park, a Broward County park east of the Turnpike. The stretch includes a signalized intersection at the park's main entrance.

Coconut Creek Police have not indicated when the driver's and passenger's names will be released. Florida law enforcement agencies typically wait until next-of-kin notifications are complete before releasing identifying details.
