COCONUT CREEK, FL — A dog made it out. The family's seven cats did not.
A predawn house fire in Coconut Creek heavily damaged a home in the South Creek neighborhood early Monday, killing all seven cats inside and sending an adult man to the hospital, according to the Coconut Creek Police Department.
The fire was reported at 4:14 a.m. on July 20, 2026, in the 900 block of Palmetto Drive, police said. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. A dog in the home survived.
Police said the house was heavily damaged and that the family who lived there has been displaced. The department said the family is expected to stay with other relatives. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
For neighbors in South Creek, the practical takeaway is limited but clear: the incident was contained to a single home, and the department has not reported any broader threat to the area or any additional injuries.

The fundraiser describes them as an aunt and uncle living on a fixed income, and says the uncle is recovering from a recent stay in an intensive care unit followed by rehabilitation. The fundraiser page says the home was destroyed and that the couple lost family keepsakes along with the seven cats.
The next step in the case is the fire investigation, which Coconut Creek Police said is ongoing. No cause had been announced as of the department's statement.
