Popular Text Scam Making Its Rounds, Here Is What You Need To Know

BROWARD COUNTY, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2023) — Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony assures the public that he doesn’t want your gift cards and warns about this new scam.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office is telling us that a new text messaging scam has been making its rounds in our area.

In this latest scam, someone is claiming to be Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony, asking victims to purchase Apple gift cards for him. The Sheriff says if you receive one of these texts just ignore it.

Further, the scam is the subject of an active investigation. BSO says if you received one of these messages to please contact BSO TMU Detective Eric Versteeg. Alternatively, you an contact the BSO non-emergency number at 954-764-4357.

As is the case with many scams, this is most likely not limited to Broward County. Similar to the Police T-shirt scam we previously reported on, these scam operators generally target many different geographic areas and jurisdictions.

Safety Tip

If you ever receive an unsolicited message form any organization, it’s always a good idea to just contact that organization directly instead of responding to the text message.
