BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — A traffic violation along North Federal Highway led to a felony arrest after Boca Raton police said they found cocaine, marijuana, and a handgun inside a pickup truck during an early morning stop near Mizner Boulevard.

Jimmy H. Sun, 36, of Boca Raton, was arrested April 25 after officers initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of North Federal Highway and NE Mizner Boulevard, a corridor that connects downtown Boca Raton with the city’s coastal and commercial areas.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by the Boca Raton Police Department, an officer observed Sun driving a white Toyota Tacoma northbound and failing to come to a complete stop at a red traffic signal. The violation prompted the officer to activate emergency lights and attempt a stop.

Instead of pulling over immediately, Sun continued driving and brought the vehicle to a stop in a parking lot west of NE First Avenue and East Palmetto Park Road. Police documented that Sun exited the vehicle and began walking away, ignoring commands to return to the truck. Officers pursued him on foot and detained him near the entrance of Kan Pai restaurant on North Federal Highway.

Once detained, officers conducted a search of the vehicle based on observations made at the scene. Inside the truck, police reported finding a smoking pipe with burnt residue on the rear passenger seat, along with additional paraphernalia.

The search expanded to the driver’s area, where officers located a large clear plastic bag containing a white powdery substance beneath the driver’s seat. A loaded black and purple SCCY CPX-2 9mm handgun was also found inside the vehicle, along with smaller baggies containing additional substances.

Laboratory submission records in the affidavit indicate the larger bag weighed approximately 16.1 grams and was sent for testing. Smaller baggies containing about 1.2 grams of white powder tested positive for cocaine, while another baggie containing roughly 1.8 grams of a green leafy substance tested positive for marijuana.

Based on the findings, Sun was charged under Florida Statutes with possession of cocaine, resisting an officer without violence, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana under 20 grams, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

A criminal history check included in the affidavit states Sun has 22 felony charges and nine felony convictions, a record that makes firearm possession unlawful under state law.

Booking records show Sun was taken into custody at approximately 6:28 a.m. on April 25 and later released April 28 after posting bond. Charges were assigned individual bond amounts, including $5,000 for cocaine possession and $7,500 for the firearm charge, with a total bond of $18,500 across the case.

The arrest follows a separate case earlier this year involving the same defendant. In February, Boca Raton police arrested Sun during a traffic stop near Palmetto Park Road and A1A after a K9 alert led to a search of his vehicle. That case involved more than 400 grams of cocaine and additional narcotics, with charges including trafficking and possession with intent to distribute. Court records show that case remains pending, with a status hearing scheduled for May 13, 2026.

Both cases are being processed through the Palm Beach County court system. The April charges are newly filed and will proceed independently of the earlier trafficking case.

For residents, the arrest unfolded along a heavily traveled section of North Federal Highway near downtown Boca Raton, an area with late-night restaurant traffic and pedestrian activity. Police enforcement actions in that corridor routinely focus on traffic violations that can lead to broader criminal investigations.

Sun’s case remains active, with future court dates expected as prosecutors review evidence and proceed with formal filings.
