GREENACRES, FL — A bicyclist died after a hit-and-run crash on South Military Trail in Greenacres, and investigators are still working to identify the driver who left the scene, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.
The crash happened at about 9 p.m. on July 4, 2026, in the 3400 block of South Military Trail near Cambridge Street, PBSO said. The bicyclist, 44-year-old Herbert Lopez Garcia, was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center with critical, life-threatening injuries and later died on July 18, 2026, at about 10:07 a.m., according to the crash report.
According to PBSO, a Toyota was traveling north on South Military Trail, approaching Cambridge Street, when the crash occurred. Investigators said Lopez Garcia was crossing South Military Trail from west to east, mid-block and outside a crosswalk, and failed to yield to the vehicle's right of way. The front of the Toyota struck the right side of the bicycle, and Lopez Garcia was thrown from the bike and came to rest on the roadway just north of the point of impact, the report states.
The driver continued north on South Military Trail and left the scene without stopping or providing any information, according to PBSO. The report notes that Lopez Garcia was not using any safety equipment at the time of the crash.
PBSO identified the make of the fleeing vehicle as a Toyota but did not release a year, model, color, or tag information. The driver had not been identified as of the most recent update, and PBSO said charges in the case are pending.
The crash is being investigated by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, with Investigator Anthony Tejeda listed on the report. As of the latest update, the driver and vehicle remained unidentified and the investigation was ongoing.
