UPDATE
BROWARD COUNTY, FL — Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit are investigating a Fourth of July crash that killed two people Saturday evening on East Dania Beach Boulevard.
BSO said the crash happened at about 5:51 p.m. Investigators said a white 2020 BMW M8 was traveling eastbound on East Dania Beach Boulevard at a high rate of speed with 38-year-old Vladimir Mushenko driving and three passengers inside.
According to investigators, the BMW struck a curb on the south side of the roadway. BSO said Mushenko overcorrected, lost control, and the car slid sideways over the curbed center median. The BMW then traveled into the westbound lanes of East Dania Beach Boulevard and struck a 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS head-on, investigators said.
BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to the scene.
BSO said one of the BMW passengers, Oleksii Masksymov, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mushenko, the two other passengers in the BMW, the driver of the Mercedes, and four passengers in the Mercedes were taken to area hospitals for treatment, according to investigators.
BSO said the third passenger in Mushenko’s car, identified as Said Akhmedov, was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators said the occupants in the Mercedes suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
Investigators said driver impairment and excessive speed were contributing factors in the crash.
BSO said Mushenko was placed under arrest the night of the incident. BSO said he faces a total of 22 counts related to vehicular homicide, DUI, and reckless driving.
The investigation remains active. BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit is responsible for the crash investigation and will continue working to determine the circumstances leading up to the collision.
For residents in South Florida traveling during holiday weekends, the case is a reminder that BSO investigators are focusing on impairment and speed as factors in serious crashes. Anyone with information related to the crash can monitor BSO updates as the investigation continues.
