The “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow” campaign, organized by the Florida Department of Transportation, aims to protect pedestrians and cyclists on county roadways. For the 12th consecutive year, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is engaged in this high-visibility enforcement program. BSO has recently received $66,393.82 through a contract with the University of North Florida’s Institute of Police Technology and Management. This funding enables deputies to educate the public while enforcing safe behaviors for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists throughout Broward County. The primary goal of this initiative is to decrease traffic crashes and fatalities involving pedestrians and cyclists through education, warnings, and enforcement operations. The enforcement campaign will continue until May 8, 2026, with an emphasis on raising awareness and ensuring compliance with traffic laws. Throughout this initiative, deputies in BSO jurisdictions will provide on-street education by engaging with motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians who utilize county roads. Deputies will enforce Florida State Statutes by issuing warnings and citations when necessary. Research indicates that pedestrian and bicycle crashes tend to result in fatal or serious injuries more often than other types of crashes. BSO encourages the community to adhere to these safety tips:
• Pedestrians should always walk on the sidewalk. If no sidewalk is present, walk facing traffic.
• Bicyclists should ride in a designated bike lane when available. Cyclists must ride with the flow of traffic.
• Pedestrians and bicyclists should refrain from using headphones or talking on their cellphones.
• Motorists should minimize distractions while driving and always be alert for pedestrians.
• Pedestrians and bicyclists should only cross streets at marked crosswalks or intersections and always obey all traffic signals.
• Pedestrians and bicyclists must ensure they are visible to drivers when walking or riding at night.
• On the road, there should be at least 3 feet of space between bicyclists and vehicles.
