BROWARD COUNTY, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a fatal crash that happened in West Park over the weekend.
BSO said the crash occurred at about 10:18 p.m. Saturday, May 9, on Pembroke Road near Southwest 46th Avenue.
According to the preliminary on-scene investigation, Mathis Frederick was driving eastbound in a 2022 Tesla Model Y on Pembroke Road approaching Southwest 46th Avenue. At the same time, Breyon Sampson was driving westbound in a 2018 Honda Accord on Pembroke Road.
Investigators said that at some point Sampson attempted to make a left turn to go southbound on Southwest 46th Avenue. The Honda was struck by the Tesla in a T-bone type collision, BSO said. Detectives said the impact caused the Honda to split in half.

Investigators said Frederick, Sampson and five passengers were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment.
One of the passengers in Sampson’s car, identified as Edger Surles, was later pronounced deceased, according to BSO.
BSO said Frederick, Sampson and the other passengers sustained injuries listed as not life-threatening.
The investigation continues. BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit is handling the case.
For residents who travel Pembroke Road in the West Park area, the crash remains under investigation and details may be updated as detectives complete their work.
