Boca Raton Severe Weather Alert: Warning Expires, but Heavy Rain and Dangerous Heat Continue Across South Florida

The National Weather Service allowed a severe thunderstorm warning for northeastern Collier and southeastern Hendry counties to expire at 5:45 p.m. Monday after the storm weakened. Heavy rain remains possible with lingering thunderstorms, and isolated storms elsewhere in South Florida may still produce gusty winds, lightning, and localized flooding.

Severe Weather Alert - Monday, June 22, 2026

BOCA RATON, FL — South Florida is in a typical late-June pattern Monday evening: hot, humid air fueling scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly over the interior and Southwest Florida. While the severe thunderstorm warning that prompted the latest NWS Severe Weather Statement has ended, residents from Boca Raton to the Everglades should not let their guard down—slow-moving storms can still bring brief downpours, frequent lightning, and isolated gusty winds through the early evening, with dangerous heat lingering into sunset.

The National Weather Service in Miami said the storm that triggered a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northeastern Collier and southeastern Hendry counties weakened below severe limits and the warning was allowed to expire at 5:45 p.m. Even so, forecasters cautioned that heavy rain is still possible with the remaining thunderstorm activity.

Slow storm motion—driven by weak steering winds—can quickly overwhelm drainage in poor-drainage spots, leading to ponding on roads and brief, localized flooding. For Boca Raton and the broader South Florida metro, the bigger message is that the atmosphere remains primed for isolated, hit-or-miss storms into the evening.

Any storm that develops can produce dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning, sudden wind gusts, and a quick burst of heavy rain that reduces visibility on I-95, Florida’s Turnpike, and major east-west routes. If you hear thunder, move indoors immediately; lightning can strike well away from the heaviest rain.

Heat is also a major concern. The NWS highlights Moderate to Major HeatRisk impacts, with afternoon temperatures in the low to mid-90s and heat indices around 103–107°F.
