Severe Weather Alert - Friday, May 29, 2026
BOCA RATON, FL — Boca Raton and the surrounding South Florida metro are settling into a stormy late-evening pattern after a severe thunderstorm warning for northern Broward and southwestern Palm Beach counties was allowed to expire at 9 p.m. Friday. While the immediate severe threat has diminished, residents should still expect pockets of heavy rain, frequent lightning, and occasional gusty winds through the late evening as storms continue to drift through the area.
The National Weather Service in Miami said the storm that prompted the warning weakened below severe limits and “no longer poses an immediate threat to life or property,” allowing the warning to expire. However, the agency emphasized that gusty winds are still possible with the thunderstorm.
For Boca Raton, that means conditions can change quickly—especially if a stronger cell redevelops or a gust front pushes through with little notice. Even without an active warning, the main impacts for residents tonight include sudden wind gusts that can knock down small branches, blow around unsecured patio furniture, and make driving difficult on east-west roads during downpours.
Lightning remains a top hazard: if you can hear thunder, move indoors immediately and stay away from windows. If you’re out on the road, slow down in heavy rain, increase following distance, and avoid flooded streets—water can hide potholes and stall vehicles.
Looking ahead, the broader forecast pattern remains active. The NWS Area Forecast Discussion notes rain chances stay high each day (with storms potentially less numerous Saturday), and heat stress will be a growing concern this weekend into early next week.
Marine Update: Boaters near the Boca Raton and Deerfield Beach area should remain alert for thunderstorms capable of producing locally higher winds and rougher seas near storms, frequent lightning, and sharply reduced visibility in heavy rain. If thunder is heard, head to safe harbor and avoid open water until storms clear.
