OAKLAND PARK, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — A driver died Wednesday morning after a collision between a Tri-Rail train and a vehicle in Oakland Park, and BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating.

Broward County Regional Communications received a call at about 10:01 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, reporting a crash involving a Tri-Rail train and a vehicle near the 1500 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

BSO district deputies and Oakland Park Fire Rescue responded. Deputies located the male driver of the vehicle deceased on scene. BSO Traffic Homicide Unit detectives responded to investigate.

Investigators said the preliminary investigation shows an adult male was driving a 2021 Chevrolet Trax sport utility vehicle eastbound on West Oakland Park Boulevard in the far-left thru lane. Investigators said safety equipment had already been activated for an approaching southbound Tri-Rail train.

BSO said the Chevrolet originally stopped partially under the crossing gate.

As the train approached the grade crossing, investigators said, the driver accelerated eastbound, traveling under the gate directly into the path of the train. The front of the train struck the driver’s side of the vehicle in a T-bone type impact.

BSO said the train pushed the vehicle south about 1,300 feet before coming to a stop.

No other injuries were reported.

The investigation remains ongoing. BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit is responsible for the investigation.

Residents who travel through rail crossings in the area should expect the case to remain under review as detectives work to determine the circumstances leading up to the collision. BSO has not released the driver’s identity in the information provided.
