BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Breezy northeast winds will be a big part of the story today, along with periods of showers and thunderstorms—especially late morning into the afternoon. Some storms could bring heavy rainfall in a short time, so watch for ponding on roads and reduced visibility during downpours. Highs top out near 80 in Boca Raton, with gusts around 20–25 mph near the coast. Beach conditions are hazardous: Palm Beach County has a high rip current risk through this evening

South Florida is still dealing with a nearby front that has been lingering just to our south, and that setup is keeping showers and thunderstorms in the forecast through Tuesday. The National Weather Service notes an upper-level disturbance moving off the Florida Peninsula early this morning, which is helping air rise and supporting scattered storms over the Atlantic and along the east coast.

A weak area of low pressure is expected to form along the front near the northwestern Bahamas and then move away to the northeast as the day goes on. For Boca Raton, that matters because winds on the back side of that system turn and strengthen out of the northeast, pulling in some drier air from the north while still leaving enough moisture for storms to pop up.

Cloud cover is a key wildcard today. If skies stay mostly gray, storms may be more limited.

If we get a few breaks of sun, the extra heating can quickly boost storm coverage and intensity. Even with only modest instability, the forecast still highlights the potential for heavy rainfall in stronger cells.

Boaters and beachgoers should plan for rougher Atlantic conditions today. Northeasterly winds increase this morning, running about 15–20 knots with gusts up to 25 knots, and seas build to 5–7 feet (occasionally higher) offshore of Boca Raton.

Intracoastal waters will be choppy in exposed areas, and winds and seas can spike quickly near thunderstorms. Conditions improve tonight into Tuesday as winds ease and seas subside to 2–4 feet.

Along the coast, the onshore wind and swell are also driving a dangerous rip current setup, especially for Palm Beach County beaches. If you’re heading to the beach, swim near lifeguards and avoid entering the water if you’re not a strong swimmer.

Current Advisories / Watches / Warnings

  • High Rip Current Risk through this evening for FLZ168 (Palm Beach County beaches).
  • Small Craft Advisory from 8 AM to 5 PM EDT Monday for AMZ650-670 (Atlantic waters from Jupiter Inlet to Deerfield Beach out 20 NM and 20-60 NM).

7 Day Outlook

  • Monday (May 4): Breezy NE winds with gusts near 20–25 mph. Showers and thunderstorms likely at times, with a few heavy downpours possible. High near 80. High rip current risk at Palm Beach County beaches.
  • Tuesday: A bit less wind and a little more sun, but still a 40% chance of showers and a few thunderstorms after late morning. High near 82 in Boca Raton. Seas and surf gradually improve.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny and warmer as drier air and stronger high pressure build in. Lower rain chances overall. High around the mid-80s, with the warmest readings away from the immediate coastline.
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny and turning hot. Heat impacts begin to increase, especially for outdoor workers and those without reliable cooling. High near the upper 80s at the coast, hotter inland.
  • Friday: Warm to hot with plenty of sun most of the day. A small late-day or nighttime shower chance returns (around 20%). Continue heat precautions during the afternoon.

  • Sunday: Unsettled pattern continues with a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon and early evening. Partly sunny with highs in the mid-80s near the coast and warmer inland.
