The Broward Sheriffs Office Internal Affairs Unit finished investigating how the agency handled the events surrounding the homicide of Mary Gingles and her father David Ponzer along, with neighbor Andrew Ferrin in February 2025 on September 12 of that year. After the internal inquiry was conducted by the authorities at BSO (Broward Sheriffs Office) six deputies were suspended from their duties and disciplinary action was taken against another 11 deputies for their involvement in handling the investigations related to the incidents reported by Mary Gingles before her passing or for their response, to the shooting incident. Moreover two employees were not found guilty of any misconduct after investigation. Furthermore the captain of BSOs Tamarac District was demoted to a deputy. Put on probation before eventually being dismissed for not meeting the probationary requirements as deemed necessary by the authorities. During the incident where shots were fired and a trainee deputy was on probation failed to meet the required standards. Was subsequently fired by Sheriff Dr.Gregory Tony for not being able to fulfill the probationary criteria adequately as a result of which Mary Gingles David Ponzers and Andrew Ferrins lives were tragically lost leading to an apologetic response from Sheriff Dr.Gregory Tony expressing sorrow and regret, over failing to ensure their safety. I directed our Internal Affairs Unit to investigate upon discovering possible failures in this instance and pursue the evidence wherever it may lead and to whoever may be at fault, for those failures ” said AI Text Finish. In February 2024 until recently Broward Sheriffs Office Tamarac District officials were alerted to reports at Mary Gingles home concerning a restraining order violation. There were instances over the months where Mary Gingles sought assistance, from BSO officers in response to distinct yet connected instances of domestic violence involving her spouse,Nathan Gingles. An internal inquiry discovered that several deputies did not conduct investigations into these domestic violence incidents. “In the months leading up to Marys death ” Sheriff Dr. Tony stated that multiple chances were missed to safeguard her despite her reports of domestic violence issues. The deputies and detectives tasked with probing these incidents did not meet their training standards and did not respond promptly to Marys pleas, for assistance.”Additionally During the investigation it was discovered that on February 16th when Broward Sheriffs Office (BSO) deputies were informed about a shooting incident in Mary Gingles Tamarac neighborhood and responded to the call for help from the residents there the sergeant in charge of coordinating the response directed the deputies to gather at a designated meeting point before proceeding to address the shooting situation. This particular decision was found to be, in violation of BSOs Active Shooter policy which clearly outlines that deputies should take tactical action to safeguard innocent lives in active threat scenarios. “The community must understand that when deputies respond to gunfire incidents they are expected to approach the danger and address it immediately without hesitation or confusion ” Sheriff Dr.Tony emphasized.”In critical situations like shooter scenarios every second counts and can determine the outcome between saving lives or tragic loss ” he added reassuringly.”We are committed to understanding and improving from our mistakes for the sake of Mary Gingles,David Ponzer and Andrew Ferrins families well, as the entire community.”
