WEST PALM BEACH, FL — A crash on Southern Boulevard in West Palm Beach turned fatal after a scooter rider injured in the collision died two days later, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say the crash happened around 10:41 p.m. March 19 in the 5600 block of State Road 80, also known as Southern Boulevard. According to the sheriff’s office, a 2023 Taizhou Hurricane scooter was traveling eastbound in the number three through lane on Southern Boulevard. A 2019 Chevrolet Equinox was also traveling eastbound, directly behind the scooter. Investigators say the driver of the SUV failed to identify the scooter while approaching, and the front passenger corner of the Equinox struck the rear of the scooter.

PBSO says the scooter rider was ejected. The rider and the scooter then came to an uncontrolled final rest on the right shoulder of eastbound Southern Boulevard against the guardrail. Investigators say the SUV was brought to a controlled final rest just east of the collision site.

The scooter rider, identified by PBSO as Christian Eugene Cagle, 26, of Loxahatchee, was taken from the scene to St. Mary’s Medical Center with critical, life-threatening injuries. On March 21, investigators say, Cagle died from those injuries and was pronounced deceased at 2:15 p.m.

The driver of the Chevrolet, identified by PBSO as 31-year-old Kourtney Nicholas Noel of Boynton Beach, was wearing a seatbelt and was not reported injured, according to the report. The sheriff’s office said the crash remains under investigation. Next of kin has been notified.
