For Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the National Weather Service forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with a high near 68 degrees. Early on, wind chill values can dip as low as 43, so it will feel colder than you might expect for mid January in South Florida. The wind is the story: a northwest wind around 15 to 17 mph with gusts as high as 23 mph. That breeze can be especially noticeable on east west roads like Glades Road, and in more open stretches around Lyons Road and the western suburbs where there is less tree cover.
Rain is not expected to be a factor today. The region stays dry through the day, with the broader forecast discussion emphasizing that dry conditions remain in place today and into Tuesday, even as the wind stays up because of a tight pressure gradient across South Florida. In plain terms, that means the air is dry, the skies cooperate, but the wind does not.
Tonight, conditions stay partly cloudy with a low around 60. It will still be breezy with a north wind 14 to 16 mph and gusts up to 22 mph. Even after sunset, that steady breeze can keep outdoor areas feeling cool, especially near the beaches and along the water where wind exposure is higher.
If you are heading to the beach, it is not just the temperature that matters today. The beach forecast discussion notes a moderate risk of rip currents along the Atlantic Coast beaches today, and it also flags that rip current risk increases for all Atlantic Coast beaches heading into Tuesday and Wednesday. The ocean can look inviting under mostly sunny skies, but the pull can be stronger than it appears, particularly near jetties, piers, and other structures.
For boaters and anyone planning time on the water, conditions are hazardous. The marine discussion states hazardous marine conditions continue today, with fresh to strong north to northwesterly winds and elevated seas. Seas across the Atlantic waters are expected to remain around 7 to 9 feet through the early to middle portion of the week. In the specific marine forecast for the coastal waters from Jupiter Inlet to Deerfield Beach out 20 nautical miles and from 20 to 60 nautical miles, winds today are forecast around 20 knots with gusts up to 25 knots. Seas are forecast 5 to 7 feet, occasionally to 9 feet, with a moderate chop on the Intracoastal. In other words, even protected waters can be bumpy, and offshore conditions are not forgiving.
Aviation conditions are expected to be mostly routine, with some scattered MVFR ceilings early and then mainly VFR for the rest of the day, while winds remain out of the north to north northwest and later turn more northeast across the east coast metro area.
