PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Tri-Rail is moving to replace older engines on the commuter rail line that runs through Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties.

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, the public agency that operates Tri-Rail, has ordered seven Siemens Mobility Charger diesel-electric locomotives to modernize its fleet. The new locomotives are expected to enter service in 2029.

For riders in Boca Raton and the rest of the corridor, the purchase is a fleet upgrade decision that touches the basics: reliability, day-to-day performance, and the ability to run service that meets specific operating requirements, including into MiamiCentral.

Tri-Rail links Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties along a 73.5-mile corridor connecting Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. The system also operates on an additional 8-mile stretch on the Florida East Coast (FEC) Corridor to access MiamiCentral, a route and station environment that requires equipment meeting defined operational and compliance standards.

SFRTA said the new Chargers will replace its aging fleet of six EMD GP49 units, allowing the agency to retire older equipment and shift daily service to newer locomotives built for modern commuter rail demands.

Siemens Mobility said the agency selected its Charger platform to support what both organizations described as a modernization effort aimed at improving reliability and the overall passenger experience. Siemens Mobility North America CEO Tobias Bauer said the Chargers are intended to deliver “modern performance and improved access,” including the ability to support service into MiamiCentral.

SFRTA Executive Director Dave Dech described the purchase as a reliability and growth move for a rail system that carries daily commuters across the tri-county region. In his statement, Dech said the locomotives are part of a longer-term vision for a safer and more efficient commuter rail system, positioning Tri-Rail for continued growth.

The procurement is being funded through the Federal Transit Administration, and SFRTA said Siemens Mobility is the only manufacturer able to provide locomotives that comply with the agency’s operational needs and regulatory requirements.

The Charger locomotives are described as EPA Tier 4 compliant. Siemens Mobility also described the Charger platform as the diesel-electric locomotive with the lowest emissions in North America.

Siemens Mobility said the locomotives will be Buy America compliant and built at the company’s rail manufacturing hub in Sacramento, California. Siemens Mobility said the Sacramento facility has been in operation for 30 years and employs more than 2,500 people onsite.

While riders will not see the new engines immediately, SFRTA and Siemens Mobility framed the timeline as a planned buildout, with production set to begin well ahead of delivery and all seven units scheduled to enter service in 2029.

For Tri-Rail, the purchase is also a statement about its role in South Florida’s broader passenger rail mix. SFRTA positioned Tri-Rail as a commuter rail option that complements intercity rail service, aimed at providing an affordable and dependable transit alternative for the region’s daily travel needs.
