The driver involved in a New Years Eve accident that claimed the life of a scooter rider was swiftly found and apprehended after fleeing from the scene of the collision. Around 10;30 p.m on December 31st in Pompano Beachs 3000 block of Copans Road area Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of a crash. Initial investigations indicated that Jacques Malik Mayfield was operating an Audi Q7 heading west on West Copans Road, towards Blount Road. The Volpam electric scooter operator was heading west on West Copans Road near the bicycle lane when an Audi veered into the scooters path resulting in a collision that sent the operator crashing into the cars windshield and then being thrown in a direction before finally coming to a stop, on the road. Detectives mentioned that Mayfield continued driving towards the west until reaching the 3600 block where he and the passengers, in the Audi decided to stop the vehicle and run away on foot from the scene. With the help of the Coconut Creek Police Departments support team both Mayfield and one of his passengers were eventually found trying to hail an Uber ride. Were promptly taken into custody. Unfortunately it was confirmed that the person operating the scooter had passed away at the site of the incident. Mayfield was then taken to BSO Main Jail. Is now facing serious allegations which include leaving the scene of an accident involving a fatality driving without a valid license resulting in death and violating felony probation terms.”The inquiry is ongoing.
