City officials say the extended pause is a precaution aimed at preventing low water pressure and reducing the risk of a citywide boil water notice while repairs continue within the municipal water system. The advisory applies citywide and covers all nonessential irrigation use, including automatic sprinkler systems and manual watering of lawns and landscaped areas.
The request comes as the city works to stabilize water service during ongoing infrastructure repairs, including a pipeline break at the water plant. To maintain reliable service, Delray Beach has temporarily opened emergency interconnections with neighboring utilities, allowing additional supply to support the system during the repair period.
At the same time, the city remains in a free chlorine period that began early Saturday, Jan. 3. The temporary increase in chlorine levels is intended to support system reliability during the repair process and help maintain safe drinking water conditions while work is underway.
City staff say crews are continuing repair efforts while monitoring system performance across the service area. The goal is to restore normal operations without triggering pressure drops that could affect households, businesses, and critical facilities.
For residents, the guidance is straightforward. Do not run irrigation systems. Do not water lawns or landscaped areas. The city is not asking residents to reduce normal indoor water use, but officials are emphasizing that limiting outdoor irrigation plays a meaningful role in maintaining overall system pressure during this period.
The advisory affects all neighborhoods and commercial properties within Delray Beach, including single-family homes, condominiums, apartment complexes, and businesses with landscaped grounds. Property managers and homeowners associations are expected to comply during the pause.
City officials have not announced a boil water notice, and none is currently in effect. The irrigation pause is being framed as a preventive step to avoid reaching that threshold while repairs continue.
