Cops Seek Driver Responsible For Hit-And-Run Accident That Injured Two-Year-Old Child In Oakland Park

UPDATE – Suspect Arrested

Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Oakland Park District have arrested a North Lauderdale woman for a hit-and-run crash involving a 2-year-old child.

The crash occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug 11, near the intersection of Northwest 43rd Street and Northwest Fifth Avenue in Oakland Park. BSO Oakland Park deputies and Oakland Park Fire Rescue personnel responded and located the toddler who was hit by a vehicle. Paramedics transported the child to a nearby hospital with injuries listed as not life-threatening.

Through investigative methods, detectives were able to obtain two surveillance videos of the suspect’s vehicle, which were released to the public. Following media broadcast of the surveillance videos, detectives said they received numerous public tips, which positively identified the driver as Kimberly Mathis.

On Thursday, Aug 17, Mathis was arrested at her home in North Lauderdale and taken to BSO’s Main Jail. She faces a charge of failing to stop/remain at an accident involving injury.

A 2-year-old child was hit by a car, and detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Oakland Park District are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the driver and vehicle involved.

On scene, emergency crews located a 2-year-old child that had been hit by a car. Paramedics transported the child to a nearby hospital with injuries listed as not life-threatening.
Surveillance video obtained near the crash shows a burgundy vehicle fleeing the scene.

OAKLAND PARK, FL (Boca Post) — The Broward Sheriff’s Office tells Boca Post that a child was injured in a hit-and-run accident near NW 43rd Street and NW 5th Ave in Oakland Park on Thursday evening.

According to BSO, at approximately 6:08 p.m., Broward County Regional Communications received a hit-and-run call near the intersection of Northwest 43rd Street and Northwest Fifth Avenue in Oakland Park.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded. On scene, deputies learned a child had been struck by a vehicle and that the vehicle had fled the scene. Oakland Park Fire Rescue also responded, and the child was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening at this time.

Deputies are on the scene investigating the circumstances surrounding this hit-and-run.

The investigation continues.
