BROWARD COUNTY, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — BSO deputies used deadly force during an encounter with a man armed with a machete Thursday morning in Oakland Park, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

BSO said deputies were called shortly before 7 a.m. to the 300 block of Northeast 38th Street for a report of a suspicious person. On scene, deputies located an adult male who was armed with a machete.

During the encounter, BSO said the man aggressively attacked the deputies with the machete and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. No deputies were injured, BSO said.

Oakland Park Fire Rescue transported the man, identified by BSO as Deavon Mc Gauley, to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the circumstances of the deputy-involved shooting, BSO said.

BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are also investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting. BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review.

Under BSO policy, the two deputies who fired their weapons were placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation.

For residents in Boca Raton and across South Florida, the case is being handled in Broward County and the investigative authority sits with FDLE for the shooting itself, with BSO conducting its parallel criminal and administrative reviews. BSO has not released additional details about what led up to the confrontation beyond the initial call and the reported attack.

What happens next is the completion of the FDLE investigation and the separate BSO reviews. Residents looking for updates should watch for additional releases from FDLE and BSO as the investigations move forward.
