UPDATE

The Boca Raton Police Services Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit confirms that the passenger injured in Thursday’s Glades Road crash has died. Investigators have identified everyone involved in the collision, which occurred around 6:00 a.m. on November 6, 2025, along the 2400 block of West Glades Road.

Police say a 2010 Dodge Caliber, driven by Edgar Eduardo Munoz Avendano, 37, of Pompano Beach, was traveling west in the inner left-turn lane when it attempted to turn into the path of an eastbound 2025 BMW X1, driven by Ashaki Sutton, 61, of Tamarac. The BMW struck the right side of the Dodge.

Both drivers sustained minor injuries. The Dodge passenger, Yonin Mejia Rodriguez, 47, of Pompano Beach, was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Felix at (561) 620-6163.

BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2025) — A Pompano Beach man has been charged with a felony after a serious crash near Town Center at Boca Raton left his passenger critically injured, according to a Boca Raton Police arrest affidavit.

Investigators said Edgar Avendano, 36, was driving west on Glades Road on Thursday morning when he attempted to turn left into the Town Center mall entrance and collided with an eastbound vehicle. The impact left one passenger with life-threatening injuries and shut down eastbound lanes between St. Andrews Boulevard and Butts Road for more than an hour while emergency crews worked the scene.

As reported by Boca Post, Police shut down Glades road for hours as they conducted their investigation on Thursday morning.

According to police, Avendano did not possess a valid driver’s license and admitted he had never been issued one in the United States. Records later confirmed that information. The report also lists his place of birth as Mexico and indicates he is a Mexican citizen.

Crash investigators said the eastbound driver had a green light when Avendano’s vehicle turned directly into the path of oncoming traffic. The passenger in Avendano’s car sustained serious internal injuries and was transported as a trauma alert to Delray Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition. Avendano was also taken there for evaluation.

The Boca Raton Police Traffic Homicide Unit, assisted by a city traffic signal technician, determined that the light system at the intersection was functioning properly at the time of the crash.

Following the investigation, Avendano was charged with Driving While License Suspended or Revoked Causing Death or Serious Bodily Injury, a third-degree felony under Florida Statute 322.34(6)(A).

Booking records show Avendano was taken into custody at Delray Medical Hospital around 4:57 p.m. Thursday and remained there under guard. He is listed as self-employed and residing at a Pompano Beach address.

Court documents indicate the case is assigned to the Palm Beach County Circuit Court. His first appearance was scheduled for Friday morning. However, he appears to still be a patient at Delray Medical Center.

The crash occurred near one of Boca Raton’s busiest intersections, just west of the Town Center mall entrance — an area often congested with retail and commuter traffic. Drivers were diverted through St. Andrews Boulevard and nearby side streets while investigators cleared the scene.
