UPDATE

BSO Deputy Shot During Manhunt, Saved by Ballistic Vest; FDLE Investigating

Originally reported by Boca Post

MARGATE, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2025) — A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy and a suspect were both taken to the hospital Thursday afternoon after a deputy-involved shooting in Margate.

It happened around 2:30 p.m. in the 6100 block of Northwest Second Street. That’s where members of BSO’s Burglary Apprehension Team were working an investigation, mid-afternoon, in a quiet residential stretch.

Things escalated.

During the operation, a shooting occurred involving a BSO deputy. The deputy was struck by the suspect but was wearing a bulletproof vest. That vest likely made the difference. Officials said the deputy did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

He was treated at the scene, then transported by paramedics to a hospital.

The suspect was also shot during the encounter and was taken to the hospital as well. No word yet on the suspect’s condition, or the extent of those injuries.

BSO has not released details about what led up to the shooting, what the suspect was doing at the time, or why force was used. The deputy and the suspect were not identified Thursday afternoon.

Police activity stretched through the afternoon hours, with patrol vehicles and investigators visible along Northwest Second Street. Neighbors watched from driveways and sidewalks. Some waited. Others went back inside.

A Broward Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer was expected to arrive on scene around 5:00 p.m. to provide additional information.

As with other deputy-involved shootings, the incident will be reviewed. How that process unfolds, and whether another agency will assist, hasn’t been announced yet.

For now, details remain limited.

Residents in the area were advised to expect a continued law enforcement presence as investigators worked through the scene and gathered evidence.
