BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) — Ellen Kaufman of Boca Raton has been arrested and charged with felony battery and witness tampering according to jail records released to Boca Post by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Ellen Kaufman, 77, of the 3000 block of 57th street in Boca Raton, has been arrested by the Boca Raton Police Department. Boca Post has been notified that the charges are felony battery and witness tampering.

According to an arrest affidavit submitted by the Boca Raton Police Department, officers arrived at Kaufman’s residence in reference to a domestic disturbance at 6:21 PM on September 14th, 2022. There, they found Kaufman’s husband who advised that he wanted to get his medicine out of the house that he and his wife share, however she would not let him. He advised that on 09/05/22, he had fallen down and broken his arm. He advised that on 09/13/22 at approximately 1700, his wife became upset with him and he attempted to leave the house due to her yelling at him and waving her telephone in his direction. He advised that as he neared the front door, his wife grabbed his left arm which was still in a sling due to it being recently broken. He stated that he was in extreme pain and then attempted to call 911 on his phone so that he could go to the hospital, however his wife grabbed the phone from his hand which prevented him from being able to call 911.

Kaufman’s husband was taken to Boca Raton Regional Hospital by the family where X-rays were taken and it was confirmed that his arm had been re-broken.

Officers then made contact with Ellen Kaufman at her residence. Ellen Kaufman advised that she may have injured the victim when she helped him up the stairs, however when asked if she did it when he was trying to leave the house, she advised she did not remember. Ellen Kaufman also denied being in any domestic disturbance with her husband but later acknowledged having one prior to his injury. Ellen Kaufman could not provide a plausible explanation of how her husband’s arm was re-broken and she denied taking his phone to deprive him of the ability to call 911.

Police then arrested Ellen Kaufman for domestic felony battery and witness tampering. Ellen Kaufman was arrested and then transported to Boca Raton Regional Hospital where she was later medically cleared to then go to jail. Ellen Kaufman was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail at 8:25 PM on Wednesday, September 14th, 2022, and released the following day. The judge ordered that Kaufman not have any contact with her husband.

Kaufman is no stranger to the Palm Beach County court system. Kaufman was arrested for aggravated battery (deadly weapon) in 2017, according to court records. Kaufman later completed a pre-trial diversion program. That charge came after Kaufman intentionally crashed her car into the golf cart driven by the assistant principal of Spanish River High School, causing him to be thrown off. School staff say they were trying to assist Kaufman who had just moments before drover her car through the courtyard of the high school.
