FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2024) — Fort Lauderdale Police were responding to a suspicious incident when a suspect shot at them early this morning.
Around 7:39 a.m., the Fort Lauderdale Police Department received a text to 911 reporting a concerning incident at this particular location. The caller claimed to have harmed someone in their hotel room. Despite multiple attempts to reach the caller over the phone, they were unresponsive. Consequently, considering the seriousness of the call and the available information, officers proceeded to the caller’s room and tried to establish contact by entering the room. During this approach, gunshots were directed at our officers. An exchange of gunfire took place between our officers and the suspect, leading to the suspect barricading themselves inside the room.
A SWAT team was called in for support to gain entry into the room. Upon entry, it was discovered that the suspect had succumbed to gunshot wounds inside the room. There were no other individuals present in the room during this incident. The circumstances surrounding their death are part of an ongoing investigation by FDLE.
One officer from Fort Lauderdale sustained injuries from gunfire and was promptly taken to Broward Health Medical Center by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue for treatment of non life threatening injuries. Another officer sustained minor injuries during the altercation but was not shot; they received medical attention on site from FLFR. Both officers involved are adult males.
The person under suspicion is a man of adult age, but his identity will not be disclosed until we have confirmed that his next of kin has been notified. He resides in the local area and is not just visiting.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is at the scene and will be responsible for investigating the shooting involving the officer.
Three officers from Fort Lauderdale discharged their firearms in response to this incident. As per department protocol, all three will be placed on administrative leave until the completion of FDLE’s investigation and an internal review by our Office of Internal Affairs.
