BSO’s Regional Traffic Unit is all set to kick off its third annual Operation Summer Splash traffic enforcement initiative this summer. With schools out and people in vacation mode, the focus is on promoting safe driving habits amidst the bustling roadways of Broward County. The initiative aims to educate and curb risky behaviors like aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving during the summer months. As per the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, speeding was a contributing factor in 29% of traffic fatalities in 2022. Operation Summer Splash will run from Monday, June 24, until Friday, August 2, aiming to enhance road safety for residents and visitors alike.The traffic enforcement program will cover the entire county, focusing particularly on cities served by BSO’s law enforcement services, as well as unincorporated Central Broward, Port Everglades and the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport.
As part of this initiative, there will be more law enforcement officers present on highways and main roads. This increased visibility aims to ensure everyone’s safety on the roads and encourage responsible driving habits.
BSO advises the public to drive within speed limits and follow all traffic regulations on county roads. Drivers should also keep in mind the following important guidelines;
Allow yourself enough time for your journey and factor in extra time for unexpected delays due to accidents or roadworks.
Avoid driving while angry. If you encounter a situation with another driver, stay calm, avoid eye contact and remember that no confrontation is worth risking an accident.
If you find yourself in a stressful or dangerous driving scenario, try to find a safe spot to pull over and compose yourself.
