Shortly after 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted Coconut Creek Police with a stolen car investigation out of Fort Lauderdale. BSO’s involvement began in the area of Sample Road and the Florida Turnpike. At some point during the investigation, the driver of the stolen car struck a marked BSO unit and then struck a marked Coconut Creek Police unit. At that point, a pursuit was initiated for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. The driver of the stolen vehicle then entered the Florida Turnpike southbound. The Florida Highway Patrol is handling the portion of the incident that occurred on the Turnpike. Please contact FHP for additional information regarding that portion of the investigation. Both the BSO deputy and Coconut Creek Police officer whose units were struck by the stolen vehicle were taken to area hospitals for treatment of injuries not expected to be life-threatening. Following the conclusion of the incident on the Turnpike, deputies arrested an adult female who was transported to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries. Detectives are working to confirm her identity, and the specific criminal charges related to the incident are still being investigated. At this time, the southbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike remain closed just south of Sunrise Boulevard as the investigation continues. Motorists are asked to use alternate routes of travel.
