On February 21st of the year 2025 in Broward County Sheriffs Office (BSO) there are specialized teams that handle different public safety issues. One of these units is the Homeless Outreach Unit within BSO that aims to break the cycle of homelessness by assisting individuals facing homelessness to reclaim and rebuild their lives. BSO ensures there is at one expert in Homeless Outreach in each district to educate fellow deputies about conducting comprehensive needs assessments, for those experiencing homelessness. During this evaluation process deputies can pinpoint the social support services required and help people in getting access to Broward Countys range of services, for care provision. This continuous endeavor impacts families and individuals positively with every step taken towards progress. “Its truly fulfilling to assist individuals or families in finding stability and transitioning out of homelessness ” shared Deputy Leonard Smith Jr., who is part of the BSO Homeless Outreach team for over three decades now and has been actively involved in the unit for the past two and a half years. According to Deputy Smith Jr. establishing connections with those experiencing homelessness is essential, for providing effective support and empathy. If you or anyone you know is facing homelessness and needs assistance please reach out to the Homeless Helpline at 954 563 4357.
