5;49 p.m. Broward County Regional Communications received several 911 calls regarding a man displaying unusual behavior in the vicinity of East Oakland Park Boulevards 500 block in Oakland Park area. Callers reported that he was brandishing a knife at people in vehicles and on foot while also hurling rocks at passing cars. Deputies from Broward Sheriff’s Office along, with BSO SWAT operators and Oakland Park Fire Rescue promptly responded to the situation. Upon reaching the scene law enforcement officers encountered an individual armed with a knife. Investigators mentioned that deputies tried to calm the situation down by talking to the person involved named Jarcara Mansfield; however he did not. Kept behaving strangely while demanding deputies to harm him verbally.” In an effort to control Mansfields actions deputies used non lethal methods but were unsuccessful as Mansfield advanced towards BSO deputies holding a knife.” Concerned for their safety and the safety of others, in the vicinity two BSO deputies shot at Mansfield multiple times.” After apprehending the suspect at the scene and promptly providing medical assistance until the arrival of Oakland Park Fire Rescue personnel the suspect was taken by paramedics to Broward Health Medical Center and is currently, in critical condition there. Thankfully no other individuals were harmed during the incident. The details surrounding the shooting are still being looked into as part of an investigation. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is examining the use of force in this case while the Broward Sheriffs Office (BSO) is looking into Mansfield’s actions.
