A driver was taken into custody following a tragic accident that resulted in two fatalities. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Lauderdale Lakes, where Gavin Dorvil, a 19 year old male from Lauderdale Lakes, was driving a Tesla Model 3 on Northwest Sixth Street towards the intersection at Northwest 27th Avenue. The crash led to the deaths of Lisa Jackson and Geraldine Francis, with another juvenile passenger sustaining critical injuries. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit conducted the investigation and made an arrest in connection with the collision. The incident occurred when a 2023 Dodge Durango was heading south on Northwest 27th Avenue towards the intersection at Northwest Sixth Street. Dorvil, driving at a high speed, crashed into the driver’s side of the Durango in a T bone style collision, causing both vehicles to veer southwest.

Following this initial impact, the Durango collided with a 2024 Chevrolet Trax that was traveling eastbound on Northwest Sixth Street and had stopped at the intersection with Northwest 27th Avenue. This collision caused the Trax to overturn onto its roof and come to rest in the eastbound lanes of Northwest Sixth Street. Meanwhile, both the Tesla and Durango continued southwest, breaking through a chain link fence surrounding a cemetery before coming to a stop.

All five individuals involved in this accident were taken by Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. Unfortunately, Lisa Jackson and Geraldine Francis, who were in the Durango as driver and passenger respectively, did not survive their injuries. Another passenger from the Durango is currently in critical condition.

Dorvil was apprehended on Tuesday night at Broward Health Medical Center and now faces charges of two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of reckless driving resulting in serious bodily harm.
Detectives anticipate that there will be additional charges forthcoming. They have indicated that excessive speed is likely a contributing factor in the accident based on their initial investigation. There is no suspicion of impairment at this point. The inquiry into the crash is still ongoing.
During their examination of the crash on Sunday, members of the Traffic Homicide Unit asked BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit to look into whether any BSO units were chasing the Tesla before the collision. The Internal Affairs team responded promptly and began assessing the circumstances surrounding the incident, with this assessment still in progress. As part of an internal review, two BSO deputies have been placed on restricted administrative duties.
After the collision, law enforcement officers found a firearm at the scene believed to have originated from the Tesla.
