Two students in Broward County have been apprehended for making threats towards schools, a serious matter emphasized by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. As the school year kicks off, the Threat Management Unit has taken swift action in response to these incidents. Additionally, there are ongoing investigations into other potential threats within the county. The recent arrests and investigations follow Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony’s strong stance on addressing school threats seriously and conducting thorough inquiries. He underlined the gravity of such actions during a recent news conference and stressed that any form of threat will be met with strict consequences. Recent developments include a tip received from the FBI regarding a social media post made by a 13 year old boy on Snapchat over the weekend.

During the investigation, detectives discovered that a student had shared a photo of himself along with a threatening message about carrying out a mass shooting at BCPS offices in Fort Lauderdale. The student’s anger was reportedly triggered by BCPS’s new policy on student cellphones. Authorities located the teenager at his residence in Weston and apprehended him on the same day.

On Thursday, August 15, TMU detectives were alerted by the FBI about another Broward County student who had made threats against Cooper City High School via Snapchat. Following an investigation into the threat, a 13 year old girl was arrested.

According to Florida law, both students are facing felony charges for making written threats to kill, cause bodily harm, carry out a mass shooting or commit an act of terrorism. Additionally, each teen has been charged with using a communication device to aid in committing a felony.

“It is regrettable that incidents like these occur all too frequently during each school year,” stated Sheriff Dr. Tony during the press briefing. “Parents need to ensure their children do not make mistakes that could lead to them having a felony on their record that may not easily be erased.”
