BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2024) — A Boca Raton man is charged with check fraud after allegedly depositing stolen checks totaling $25k.
A victim walked into a PBSO substation in January 2024 to report check fraud. The man said he paid the IRS $20,296, which he knows was debited from his checking account, but they IRS never received the funds. The man later determined he was the victim of a second occurrence of check fraud when he found that a $5,180 payment to the Veterans Administration had also gone missing. The man wanted to press charges, so a PBSO detective investigated both incidents.
The detective learned that the checks were originally placed in the victim’s mailbox on 12/28/2023.
During the investigation, investigators used facial recognition software to identify Broderick as a suspect in depositing the checks to the different accounts. Detectives later found that deposits were made to a bank in Boynton Beach as well as Boca Raton.
Broderick was pulled over in his white BMW near his mothers home in unincorporated Boca Raton where detectives arrested and charged Broderick with one count of 831.02 Uttering A Forged Instrument. Broderick was released on a $5,000 bond 8 hours later.
