Severe Weather Alert - Sunday, July 12, 2026

BOCA RATON, FL — Boca Raton and the rest of coastal Palm Beach County are moving out of an active early-evening window after the National Weather Service said the storm that prompted a severe thunderstorm warning in northeastern Palm Beach County weakened and the warning expired at 6:45 p.m. Sunday. While the immediate severe threat has eased, residents should stay weather-aware through the evening and into the next few days as isolated storms can still flare up—especially inland—alongside oppressive heat and hazy conditions from a Saharan Air Layer.

The NWS Severe Weather Statement issued at 6:40 p.m. reported the warned storm had weakened below severe limits and no longer posed an immediate threat to life or property.

For Boca Raton-area residents, that means the most urgent risk of damaging wind gusts and severe thunderstorm impacts has diminished for now. However, lingering lightning, brief heavy downpours, and localized gusty winds can still occur near any remaining storms, even after a warning expires.

The broader setup across South Florida remains dominated by very hot, humid conditions. The NWS Area Forecast Discussion notes heat indices between 105 and 110 degrees are expected each day through midweek.

Drier air associated with a Saharan Air Layer plume is also contributing to hazy skies and generally lower rain chances along the coast, but isolated showers and thunderstorms may still develop each afternoon—most likely across interior areas. What to do now: If you hear thunder, go indoors immediately and stay away from windows.
