LAKE WORTH, FL — A 77-year-old Lake Worth man died more than two weeks after a single-vehicle crash in a South Congress Avenue parking lot in unincorporated Palm Beach County, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.
Richard L. Preston, of Lake Worth, was pronounced dead at 6:45 a.m. on June 28, PBSO said. The crash that led to his death occurred at 2:59 p.m. on June 10 outside 6080 S. Congress Ave., in unincorporated Lake Worth.
The PBSO Vehicle Homicide Investigations Unit was notified of the delayed fatality on June 30, according to the log entry released by the agency.
Investigators said Preston was driving a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee south through the parking lot on the west side of the address. According to the crash report, the driver "applied the gas instead of the brake," causing the Jeep to jump the south curb of the parking lot and strike a palm tree with the front of the vehicle.
Preston suffered leg and head injuries, PBSO said. The Jeep sustained heavy damage, and the palm tree sustained minor damage, according to the report. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue responded to the scene.
PBSO said Preston was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The log entry does not indicate any suspected alcohol or drug involvement.
The case is being handled by PBSO Investigator W. Amadon. The log entry does not list any pending or filed charges, and no arrest is noted.
PBSO said next of kin have been notified and the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office is aware of the death.
