"Our shelter is FULL!!!"

BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Tri-County Animal Rescue says its Boca Raton shelter is full after four dogs were surrendered within one hour of opening, adding new pressure to a facility already asking residents to consider adoption.

The rescue, located at 21287 Boca Rio Road, said the surrendered dogs ranged from tiny 8-week-old puppies to a 13-year-old senior dog. The message was direct. The shelter is full, and more animals continue coming in faster than the rescue can place them.

For residents in Boca Raton and surrounding Palm Beach County communities, the situation is a local shelter capacity issue playing out in real time. Tri-County Animal Rescue is asking families, couples and individuals who have been considering adoption to visit the shelter and meet available animals this weekend.

The request comes as BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” adoption event is running through May 17. The national adoption event is meant to help shelters move adoptable pets into homes by encouraging more people to adopt during a designated campaign window.

Tri-County said animals available through the shelter include puppies, adult dogs and senior pets. The rescue described the need as constant, with people continuing to surrender pets while the shelter tries to make room for incoming animals.

The adoption package being offered by Tri-County includes a gift bag with toys and treats, pet beds, food to help adopters get started at home, a free pet meal at Lazy Dog Restaurant in Boca Raton and a gift certificate to Jake’s Pet Supply.

The rescue also said every animal is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, checked for parasites and given a dental exam or dental care if needed.

That matters for new adopters. It means the animals are not simply being handed off. They have already gone through basic veterinary and intake steps before leaving the shelter, according to the rescue.

Tri-County’s message was also aimed at the broader problem shelters face when surrender numbers outpace adoptions. Every adoption frees space for another animal the rescue may be asked to take in.

The shelter is asking residents to “come meet your new best friend” and help make room so it can continue accepting animals in need.

Tri-County Animal Rescue is located at 21287 Boca Rio Road in Boca Raton. The shelter can be reached at 561-482-8110.
