BROWARD COUNTY, FL — BSO is set to hold its annual awards ceremony Thursday, May 7, at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center.

The event is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at 3800 N.W. 11th Place, Lauderhill, FL 33311. BSO said the ceremony will recognize the contributions of its employees, community partners, and local citizens.

BSO described the honorees as people who have shown extraordinary service, commitment, and acts of selflessness in service to their community.

Among the awards highlighted by BSO this year is the Medal of Honor. BSO said Deputy Paul Petrillo and Sgt. Nelson Mendez will receive the Medal of Honor after surviving near-death experiences with a gunman.

BSO also said Deputies Khirye Allen and Manuel Smith will receive the Medal of Honor for quick actions that saved a woman from being struck by a train.

Beyond the Medal of Honor recipients, BSO said it will present Gold Cross, Lifesaving, Exceptional Service, and Samaritan awards, among others. In total, BSO said 161 recipients will be recognized.

BSO is the agency hosting the ceremony and overseeing the awards program. The sheriff’s office said it is commending the recipients and celebrating their accomplishments.

What happens next is the ceremony itself on May 7 in Lauderhill, where the awards will be distributed. BSO also provided a link to view a list of the recipients.

For residents in South Florida, including those in Palm Beach County who follow regional public safety agencies, the key details are the date, time, and location of the ceremony, and that BSO is recognizing a large group of employees and community members for service and lifesaving actions.
