BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Boca Raton is in for a mostly cloudy Thursday with periods of showers, a few thunderstorms, and a high rip current risk at Atlantic beaches through the evening.

Today’s Weather – Thursday, January 22, 2026

Boca Raton wakes up to a wet, unsettled setup that is not in a rush to leave. For the area around the Boca Raton Airport, the National Weather Service is calling for showers likely through the first half of the day, with at least a small thunderstorm threat mixed in, then more hit-or-miss storms possible after midafternoon.

Expect a mostly cloudy sky most of the day and a high near 77. The wind will be out of the north at about 8 to 10 mph, enough to keep the air moving but not enough to scrub out the low clouds along the I-95 corridor and toward the beaches. Rain chances sit at 60 percent, with forecast rainfall amounts generally between a quarter and a half inch. The bigger question for commuters is timing. The forecast keeps the steadiest shower chances in play before about 3 p.m., then shifts to a “chance” category after that, which often translates into fast-moving downpours that can change the feel of the afternoon quickly.

The broader forecast discussion from the weather service suggests the east coast of South Florida is the focus today, with the potential for heavier pockets of rain if the heaviest activity sets up onshore. In a worst-case scenario, forecasters note an isolated location could pick up more than 3 inches, though the more likely totals along the immediate east coast are in the half-inch to 1-inch range. If the heavier rain ends up over land, there is some concern for minor flooding even though conditions have been dry. Locally, that is the kind of quick water that can show up in the usual low spots near busy intersections and along roadway edges, especially around morning and mid-day traffic windows.

The beach message is simpler and more urgent: a high risk of rip currents remains in effect for Coastal Palm Beach County through this evening. That includes Boca Raton’s Atlantic shoreline. The warning is blunt. Rip currents can pull even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The guidance is to swim near a lifeguard and, if caught, relax and float, do not fight the current, and try to angle parallel to the shoreline until you can break free.

Boaters will also notice the day’s unsettled pattern. The marine forecast for the coastal waters from Jupiter Inlet to Deerfield Beach calls for northeast winds around 10 to 15 knots today with seas running 2 to 4 feet, occasionally up to 5 feet. Showers remain likely with a chance of thunderstorms until late afternoon, then a lingering chance of showers with a slight thunderstorm chance late. On the Intracoastal, the forecast calls for light chop today, but conditions can change quickly in and around storms.

Tonight, rain chances back off but do not drop to zero. Boca Raton holds onto a mostly cloudy sky with a low around 69. There is a 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before midnight, with a slight chance of thunderstorms returning late toward daybreak. Winds turn northeast at 7 to 10 mph.

Current Advisories / Watches / Warnings

A Rip Current Statement is in effect: High Rip Current Risk remains in effect through this evening for Coastal Palm Beach County. The advisory warns of dangerous rip currents and notes they can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Precautions include swimming near a lifeguard and not swimming against the current if caught.
