RIVIERA BEACH, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2025) — A Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy shot a man armed with a machete during a domestic disturbance call in unincorporated Riviera Beach on Tuesday evening, leaving the man in critical condition, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

PBSO said deputies were called around 6 p.m. on November 18, 2025, to a reported domestic disturbance in the 7400 block of 43rd Terrace North in an area just outside the city limits of Riviera Beach. While deputies were still trying to sort out what was happening, the situation turned violent.

When they arrived, deputies made contact with a woman standing in the home’s carport, the agency said in a statement. As they spoke with her to gather information, an adult male walked out of the residence, passed by the woman and went straight to nearby bushes, where he pulled out a large machete.

According to PBSO, the man then advanced toward the deputies while swinging the machete above his head. Deputies backed away and tried to de-escalate the confrontation, the agency said. They issued “numerous verbal commands,” repeatedly telling the man to drop the weapon.

Despite those commands, the Sheriff’s Office said the man continued moving toward the deputies with the machete in his hand. At that point, one PBSO deputy fired his gun, hitting the suspect.

Deputies immediately rendered aid at the scene, according to the statement. Riviera Beach Fire Rescue took the man to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition as of Tuesday night.

No information was released about the identities or ages of the man, the woman in the carport, or the deputies involved. PBSO also did not say how many shots were fired or whether anyone else inside the home was injured.

As is standard after a deputy-involved shooting, PBSO said the deputy who fired has been placed on administrative leave while the case is reviewed. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the outside investigation into the use of force, with the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office and PBSO’s Violent Crimes Division also involved in the ongoing review.

Authorities did not release any details about the original domestic disturbance call or what may have led up to the confrontation in the carport. No charges or arrests related to the incident had been announced in the statement released late Tuesday.

The investigation is active, and PBSO said multiple agencies will be examining what happened on 43rd Terrace North — from the initial 911 call to the moment the deputy opened fire and the emergency response that followed.
