UPDATE

Broward Sheriff's Office tells Boca Post that, Pedro Lugo-Bello, the sanitation worker critically injured last month in a crash involving a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy has died. BSO’s traffic homicide detectives are investigating the incident.

The deputy who struck Lugo-Bello with his cruiser has been identified as Deputy Symone Bullard who has only been with BSO since 2019.

UPDATE

No update on the condition of the sanitation worker who was struck by a BSO patrol vehicle early this morning in Pompano Beach. Boca Post was last told that he was transported to the hospital in life-threatening condition.

BSO provided Boca Post with the following update Friday afternoon:

The preliminary investigation reveals that the pedestrian was driving a sanitation truck southbound on North Ocean Boulevard and stopped the vehicle in the shared designated left turn lane in front of a construction site. At the same time, a BSO deputy was driving a BSO marked 2015 Dodge Charger and was heading northbound on North Ocean Boulevard.

As the deputy approached the designated left turn lane, the pedestrian exited his vehicle and stepped into the northbound lane of North Ocean Boulevard, directly into the path of the deputy. The pedestrian was struck by the deputy’s vehicle.

The deputy came to a controlled stop a short distance away and immediately attempted to render aid and reported the crash. Speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Additionally, the roadway in that area has fully reopened.
