RIVIERA BEACH, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2023) — Two people are dead after being struck by a Riviera Beach Police Officer's patrol vehicle early on Sunday morning.

According to the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office, Officer Carl Johnson with the Riviera Beach Police Department is in serious condition following the crash that left two dead.

Investigators say that Officer Carl Johnson was driving his patrol vehicle, a 2022 Dodge Charger, southbound on Australian Avenue in the inside lane. At the same time, a Hyundai Genesis G80 was traveling northbound on Australian Avenue within the left turning lane.

As Officer Carl Johnson was approaching W 13th Street, the driver of the Genesis began turning left to travel west on W 13th Street.

During the crash, the front of the patrol vehicle impacted the passenger side of the Genesis. Both vehicles were redirected onto the southwest shoulder of the roadway, where they came to their final rest positions.

The driver and passenger of the Genesis were pronounced deceased at the crash scene. Officer Carl Johnson was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
