WESTLAKE, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — A fast-growing pocket of central Palm Beach County is getting a new public school, with officials marking the start of construction on an elementary campus in Westlake expected to open for students in August 2027.

The School District of Palm Beach County held a groundbreaking Thursday morning at the corner of Persimmon Boulevard and Green Lane, a site positioned to serve one of the county’s newest residential communities. The ceremony marks the formal start of a project tied directly to ongoing population growth west of West Palm Beach.

District planners describe the school as a three-story, roughly 97,000-square-foot campus designed to accommodate modern classroom needs while managing land constraints in a rapidly developing area. The building will include standard general education classrooms alongside specialized spaces intended for arts and performance.

Among the features outlined by the district are an integrated exterior covered play area, a multipurpose performance space, and a patio connected to a music lab. The design reflects a broader shift in school construction across Palm Beach County, where newer campuses are being built vertically and with flexible-use spaces.

The site selection places the school within the city limits of Westlake, a municipality incorporated in 2016 that has seen steady residential expansion. As new housing continues to come online, the demand for nearby public school capacity has increased, particularly at the elementary level.

Responsibility for the project sits with the School District of Palm Beach County, which oversees public education facilities, construction planning, and enrollment capacity across the county. The district routinely evaluates growth patterns and adjusts its capital program to add seats where development is outpacing existing school infrastructure.

While construction is now underway, the school does not yet have a name. District officials said a naming committee will be formed in accordance with School Board policy, a process that typically involves community input before a final recommendation is made to the Palm Beach County School Board for approval.

The timeline outlined by the district calls for the school to open in time for the start of the 2027–28 academic year. That schedule aligns with the district’s standard construction window for projects of this size, assuming no major delays.

For families already living in Westlake and nearby communities, the new school is expected to help relieve enrollment pressure at surrounding campuses while reducing commute times for younger students. Boundary assignments and attendance zones tied to the new school are typically finalized closer to the opening date.

Residents can expect to see ongoing construction activity at the site over the next year, including site preparation, vertical building work, and eventual interior buildout. Traffic patterns near Persimmon Boulevard and Green Lane may be affected intermittently as construction progresses.

The project is one of several school capacity initiatives underway across Palm Beach County, reflecting continued population growth in both western and suburban areas of the region.
