Two bystanders in West Boca were at the right place at the right time and jumped in to action when they saw a vehicle drive off of the road and in to the canal on 441 near Judge Winikoff Road. While they don’t like being called heroes they certainly are.
On November 18th 2021, a vehicle veered off of the road and crashed in to the canal. 16 year old West Boca Raton High School Student Anthony Martinez and 32 year old Caio Trindade both pulled over and helped.
Martinez, who just days ago lost his father to COVID-19 complications, said his father always taught him to help someone in need if you can. Martinez said he saw a need so he took action. He sure did.
“I swim around and I move the airbag out of the way, I tell her to come to me. She gives me her hand. I grab her by the hand and I pull her over, then I grab her by her torso, and I’m able to pull her out of the car,” Martinez said. “I had her full body weight on me, I didn’t have anything to swim with, so I pass her over to the people that were next to me.”
Luckily Caio was there as well. Caio was there to help keep the victim above the water as she struggled. They asked the woman if anyone else was in the vehicle to which she said no.
The victim is expected to be OK.
