First Sea Turtle Nest Of The Season Found On Boca Raton Beach

2nd Earliest Season Since 2008

BOCA RATON, FL – Boca Post (BocaPost.com) — Turtle nesting season has come a little early this year as the first nest of the season was spotted on a Boca Raton beach yesterday morning.

The first leatherback nest has been observed on a Boca Raton beach and has been marked by staff at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. This is the 2nd earliest start of a leatherback nesting season since 2008 which started on 2/12/2008 on that year.

So a few things to know if you are not from Florida. That is not an abandoned sandcastle. That is a sea turtle nest. It is absolutely illegal to touch or molest sea turtle nests in any way. Authorities will generally mark the nests with signage as seen above, but sometimes, you may find unmarked nests. Leave them alone. Report them to a lifeguard or FWC.

So remember, always respect boundary markers and be mindful of any new turtle nests that may have not yet been marked.

If you ever observe someone disturbing a sea turtle nest or an injured, dead, or harassed sea turtle you should report it to FWC immediately. Call Wildlife Alert 888-404-FWCC (888-404-3922) or report it online. Cell phone users can also call *FWC or #FWC, or send a text to Tip@MyFWC.com.
